1960 — 1969
I could not tell you the year I started paying attention. I can tell you the light — low and yellow through a window that never quite shut, and the sound of a house waking up around me while I pretended to still be asleep.

What survives from this far back survives by accident. Someone forgot to throw it out. Someone put it in a box, and the box went up into a loft, and the loft stayed dry. That is the whole story of everything in this chapter.
